Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent figures of the Vienna Secession movement.
Born in Baum garter, Austria, he studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and initially worked on decorative murals and public buildings. Klimt became famous for his ornamental style, erotic themes, and use of gold leaf, particularly in works like The Kiss (1907–1908) and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907). His “Golden Phase” was heavily influenced by Byzantine mosaics, resulting in richly decorated and shimmering paintings.
Despite controversy over the sensuality of his art, Klimt was highly successful and received numerous commissions. His later works, such as The Tree of Life and Death and Life, showcased a blend of Symbolism and Art Nouveau, with intricate patterns and dreamlike compositions.
Klimt never married but had several relationships, fathering multiple children. He died in 1918 due to a stroke and pneumonia, leaving behind unfinished masterpieces. His work remains highly influential, with Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I selling for $135 million in 2006.
